About Ooty
Ooty is a hill station located where the Eastern and Western Ghats merge. This merger is marked by Dodabetta, the highest point in South India. Ooty sprawls over an area of 36sq km with tall buildings cluttering its hill slopes. A lot of talk is around that the place has lost its charm. Not exactly true. Ooty remains the beautiful place it has always been and the unexplored places are as beautiful as they used to be a decade ago.
Urbanization is inevitable and Ooty too has embraced it. Tourism is the main attraction and makes up for the bulk of revenue generated by the district. Life at Ooty is slow. For all those in the fast moving world, Ooty would come as a big break from the mechanical life and a time to relish, spending in compliance with the beauty of the nature. Sunrise and the sunsets are not much spoken of, but if you get to see one in Ooty, life will never seem more beautiful.
A lot of shops, mostly small scale, sell a variety of products ranging from designer clothes to fresh vegetables to home made chocolates and even horses (if you are lucky). Year after year, it draws tourists, adventure enthusiasts, honeymooners and the film industry like bees to nectar. The commercial road forms the main business lane for the town and 30% of the business income via shopping comes from this long lane.
Economically speaking, Ooty can sustain itself with the income from potato and other hill vegetables and tea. As the slopes have been devoted to tea, vegetables have come to be cultivated in low-lying areas and swamps. There is also a vegetable market that supplies vegetables grown by the people living in and around the town and some of these are transported to places like Mettupalayam and so on.
Ooty, which was once a gateway from the steamy summers of the plains for the British personnels is now the hill station that caters to holiday makers from all over the world. The verdant hills, the lush green valleys and the pristine natural beauty of the hill resort of Ooty offers the urban tied souls a chance to resume their affair with nature, to which they truly belong.
The unassuming beauty of this heavenly hill station beckons you to come and embrace the tranquility and solace that Ooty has to offer. Regardless of what you seek, a quiet holiday, a fun trip to a wildlife tour, you can have it all in Ooty. The beauty of Ooty and the Nilgiri Hills with the local reserve forests offer many opportunities to enjoy nature in solitude. It is a place that is forever rejuvenating!
